JUDO ACADEMY
Our team helped source, build and fit out this complex multi-use space. Incorporating gym, leisure, judo and mixed use space all under one roof.
As architects, we were presented with a unique challenge when Olympic silver medalist Ray Stevens expressed his desire to establish his own academy. For Ray Stevens Judo Academy, the aim was to create a distinct identity for the academy within an existing space. After evaluating various options, the Burlington Road property emerged as the ideal choice. This property consisted of three distinct buildings, each with different use classes – an office, a golf shop, and a mechanics workshop. Our challenge was twofold: navigating the planning hurdles for change of use and addressing the traffic and parking constraints on a busy road.
The primary challenge lay in securing planning permissions for the diverse use classes. Our persistence and creativity allowed us to navigate these hurdles successfully. Additionally, the issue of limited parking on the bustling road posed a significant concern for the community facility we envisioned. Despite these challenges, our focus remained on capitalizing on the unique features of the property. The distinct zigsagging roof with its intricate trusses captured our attention. We aimed to preserve this feature and enhance it by incorporating skylights. Notably, the most daunting challenge was the project's minimal budget.
Undeterred by budget constraints, our approach centered on maximizing the utilitarian aspects of the space. The expansive area and numerous structures necessitated a cost-effective strategy that celebrated the raw charm of the property. The finishes were simple, embracing an urban aesthetic with stainless steel sinks, open-plan showers, and exposed brickwork. Despite the budget limitations, we ensured the space exuded a polished yet industrial feel. We carefully designated zones to cater to the diverse needs of the community, including a gym, Judo club, and social space.
The academy's exterior also received thoughtful attention. The Georgian building's character was enhanced through strategic painting of windows and exteriors. The inclusion of a reception area in the middle facilitated circulation between the gym and café, providing a versatile space for various uses. Structural modifications were essential, involving the insertion of robust steel beams to accommodate the open dojo area.
In conclusion, the Ray Stevens Academy project exemplified our ability to transform a multi-use complex into a functional and vibrant space despite budget constraints. By embracing the utilitarian aesthetic and celebrating the existing features, we successfully addressed challenges in planning, parking, and structural modifications. The end result is a facility that reflects the academy's ethos while accommodating the diverse needs of its community.
